REBUILT DISTRIBUTORS

Corvair Underground has rebuilt hundreds of distributor since the mid 70's. Whether you need a basic housing, shaft with double bushings all the way up to a complete Ignitor distributor we've got you covered.

But why buy from the Underground?  Your local auto parts can get you one much cheaper (maybe). Doing a proper rebuild is more than just cleaning up and slapping parts together. Our distributors come with honed-fit double bronze bushings. Many big rebuilders use single cast iron bushings that will quickly fail and destroy your shaft!

When your Corvair was designed the distributor was one of the last mechanical components added. Why? Because your distributor must match your year, horsepower, engine size and type, transmission and any other options the factory put on (eg - air conditioning, smog pump etc). Most rebuilders just gather up "Corvair distributor parts" clean them up and reassemble them at random with no regard for correct components.

The cam, shaft, weights, springs, all must be correct. The housings are all the same, but - they do have numbers stamped in them that should identify the particular distributor. Corvair Underground makes certain your distributor is what it should be - inside and out.

But can't you just buy a bushing and do it yourself?  Good luck. Because of housing and shaft variations you can't simply buy a bushing, press it in and expect to have a correct fit. As I said, ours are hone-fit so that you have the closest possible tolerance without risk of having a shaft seizure because it's too tight.

You have your choice

A) BASIC BARE   - This is a correct distributor housing, correct shaft with double bushings installed and hone-fitted. The shaft washers are also fitted for clearance and a new pin and gear are installed. THERE IS NOTHING ELSE. (No weights, no cam, no springs, no points plate etc.)  A mounting gasket is also included.        $49,50

B) BASIC MINUS - Just like a Basic Bare but the correct cam, weights and springs are included.      $59.50

C) BASIC -  same as a Basic Minus but a Corvair Underground rebuilt points plate is also included*     $89.50

D) BASIC IGNITOR  - same as a Basic but instead of a points plate you get an Ignitor I electronic ignition (Which has its own points plate).   $129.50

E) SUPER  -  Same as a basic but includes a new distributor cap, points, rotor and condenser. Also a new vacuum advance (where available**)   $148.50

F) SUPER IGNITOR  - Just like the regular Super but has an Ignitor electronic ignition instead of points and condenser.      $188.00

NOTES -  * The points plate is an important part of any distributor rebuild. The original design plates have no bushing and eventually wear at the pivot plate shaft. This causes erratic opening and closing of the points and also can interrupt the points ground. This will manifest itself in missing, hesitation, backfiring and overall poor -to-terrible engine operation.

Corvair Underground points plates have a bronze bushing at the pivot for long wear and reliability.

** New vacuum advances are presently available for all Corvair distributors late 1961-69 EXCEPT for turbocharged engines and 140 engines. If you have a turbocharged or 140 that has a bad vacuum advance we MAY have a good used replacement - but not always.

CORE CHARGES - All rebuilt components have core charges. This is to insure that we keep a supply of cores coming back to rebuild for the next guy. The core charges are based upon their scarcity. When you return your old distributor you may be eligible to get some or all of your core charge back - but not always.  Because of the problems with other rebuilders (as mentioned above) you distributor may be a hodge-podge of multiple parts from different distributors. If you're in doubt call us first and we'll do our best to determine what you have right now.

CURRENT CORE CHARGES -

1960-63    All except turbos    $10.00        62-63 Turbos    $50.00

1964-67   95 hp   $10.00       1964-67   $110hp  $30.00     1964-66   Turbo   $50.00     1965-67    $140hp    $40.00

1968-69 or with smog pump all years   $10.00

ALL REBUILT DISTRIBUTORS ARE 10% OFF THE REGULAR PRICE FOR THE MONTH OF September 2010. Discount does not apply to core charges.

GoVair Brand Bolted Flywheels

For the past 30 years we've been proud to sell Dale Brand bolted flywheels. But Dale Manufacturing has discontinued this quality product as of March 2010.

Flywheels have been a critical component in all manual transmission Corvairs since day one. The original flywheels are of a 3 part riveted design. These soft rivets start to fail very early on. As the rivets fail you will get rattling and vibration from the clutch. If left to deteriorate you can end up with broken starter noses, wiped out input shaft seals and pilot bushings.

If left to get even worse you can destroy the front pinion bearing in your differential, which will destroy the differential and then contaminate the transmission with metal particles. Let it go long enough and you can even crack and break your crankshaft.

We believe that, had the Corvair come with a better flywheel, over 75% of all big ticket repairs in Corvairs could have been eliminated.  That would have made the Corvair a nearly perfect machine.

So what do we do now? As Dale Manufacturing's longest running retailer we got to know the flywheels pretty well. We have done our best to recreate the classic design, using many of the same materials and techniques that made the Dale flywheel so popular.

Please understand, unlike other some other vendors, we will not try and claim that ours are Dale flywheels, when we're actually doing them ourselves. Every Dale flywheel was personally rebuilt by Dave Langsather himself - And his perfect workmanship and almost super-human attention to detail is not likely to be duplicated - ever. (Even by us!)

But we're going to try and do our best.

Pictured above is a 1964-69 ("Late" style) GoVair stepped flywheel.

All our flywheels have cap grade tapered bolts with lock washers and self locking nuts. All are resurfaced and we check face and edge runout to specs far better than new stock flywheels. We finish up by balancing them to within a gram.

Checking end run out on a special fixture.

Checking face run out on same fixture.

Doing a great job on a flywheel is a lot more complicated than just knocking the rivets out and bolting it together.

If you're doing a clutch job look over your flywheel - If it's an original riveted one then REPLACE IT, with one of our GoVair bolted flywheels! Avoid multiple costly problems down the road!

GoVair Flywheels

1960-63 (Flat face)    $179.50  no core charge

1964-69 (Stepped face)   $159.50 plus $30.00 core

 Motor Mount Special for 2010!

Many of you were fortunate to order discounted motor mounts with no core charge last month.

That sale has come and gone, but  ...... We still have a lot of motor mount cores in stock - in fact, still too many. So, for the month of September you can still buy rear motor mounts with NO CORE CHARGE. Last months 10% is over but you can still save some serious money by not having to pay the core charge or deal with sending cores back.

Pictured to the right is an old used 1965 motor mount. Used on all 1965 cars.

Our PN U-2025

The regular low Underground price is  $122.00  and NO core charge for September!

To the left is a picture  of a 1961-64 Motor mount  . There are actually three different ones. 1961-63 cars without air conditioning (PN U-2023), 1961-63 cars WITH air conditioning (PN U-2023x)  and 1964 cars (PN U-2024).

The differences can pretty much be summed up as to the exact location of the lower mount bolt.

We should have LOTS of cores for all but the air conditioned style, so,

Low Underground price is $79.00 and NO core charge for September!

Our final specimen is to the left again. This is a picture of a revulcanized 1966-69 Motor mount.

This is a motor mount that is preferred for use even in 1965 cars (It will replace the U-2025 above without any modifications).

The problem of course is that for those who wish to use it on a 65 may not have the correct core to send back to get their $30.00

refunded. NOT THIS TIME!   Our low Underground price is $133.50  and NO core charge for September!

ABOUT THESE MOUNTS

These mounts are rebuilt by Steele Rubber. The rubber is removed , blasted, painted and new rubber is vulcanized on. Steel has been doing this popular service for

over 30 years, and we've been a West Coast distributor for Steele for nearly 25 years.

ORDERING INFORMATION

In order to make this special offer we will be sending batches in to Steele for re-manufacturing as we get orders for them. It takes 1-2 weeks for Steele to turn these around, and about 8-10 days to send them in and get them back. So when you place your order expect a "turnaround" time of 3-4 weeks. If you're in a hurry this is NOT the deal for you! **

But, if you'd like to get the best possible deal on these mounts for future projects, now is the time. Even if you send us your cores, that costs extra shipping. Plus

the mounts are discounted from the low Underground price - a price unmatched by our competitors.

** Of course, we try to keep some mounts in stock - and will send more in for stock as these special orders are sent in -

Any questions?
